Ystwyth Garage-I Acrylic, Ink, Collage on canvas board 50 x 60cm

Garages of Ceredigion…this one is still working as an MOT station and has one diesel pump…
from a painting/artistic perspective the garages require a different way of looking/seeing compared to the old barns…it’s as much about the nitty-gritty; the grime and possible decay of the place as it is about the shapes, patterns and architecture…

This one sort of concluded the series of barns which I was doing in Autumn last year (2011).
The next phase for me is to work on a series of old garages…

Crabapples-I 30 x 42cm Ink, pencil, woody on bristol paper

in days of yore Still life drawing/painting was considered to be good practice, practice presumably for the “real thing!”…it is an art form in itself of course…crabapples are unloved objects, usually neglected and yet they have an intrinsic beauty…lovely to draw and paint, the simple shapes allow me to concentrate on other aspects…

Musings…

One of my own favourite artists is Alex Kanevsky, he writes in his “progress series” on his website about trying to understand what goes on in the creative process and likens it to wandering around in the dark. I used to think it was mostly about technique or skill but after years of honing my techniques I would now say that it’s now more about some highly impulsive, individual movements and often I’m not at all sure where they come from…i.e. wandering about in the dark…though at least I know when it’s working.
